Reviews
Erika is one of the most caring and compassionate health practitioners I have found. She is truly and expert in her field. I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking relief from any variety of ailments.
I have seen Erika numerous times and she has always provided me with compassionate help through acupuncture, massage, and her gentle, kind attitude toward her patients.
“One thing that I LOVE about Erika is that she worked for years as a massage therapist before she became a licensed acupuncturist. I started my treatment for severe muscle tension in my back and neck because of sitting at the computer and working at a desk and reading a lot (I can feel it building now…) Once she comes back in to remove the needles, she’ll use her massage knowledge to continue to work the tension out of the muscles, sometimes for a good 5-10 minutes. It’s a great bonus! I always leave feeling not only more physically relaxed, but mentally and emotionally calmed.” – Rachel E.
What is Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment that has evolved into a complete holistic health care system. Practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this noninvasive treatment method to help millions of people become well and stay well.
Acupuncture promotes natural healing. It can enhance recuperative power, immunity, support physical and emotional health, and improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless, and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.
What is Qi?
At the core of this ancient medicine is the philosophy that Qi or vital energy, flows throughout the body. Qi animates the body and protects it from illness, pain, and disease. A person’s health is influenced by the quality, quantity, and balance of Qi.
There are more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. Meridians are like superhighways of your Qi.
The transport system of your vital energy throughout the body and organs. Meridians are a circulatory system of energy, much like the circulatory system of blood.
How is Qi disrupted?
An obstruction to the flow of Qi is like a dam. When Qi becomes backed up in one part of the body, the flow becomes restricted in other parts. This blockage of the flow of Qi can be detrimental to a person’s health, cutting off vital nourishment to the body, organs, and glands.
Physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, overexertion, seasonal changes, poor diet, accidents, or chronic infections are among the many things that can influence the quality, quantity, and balance of Qi.
Normally, when a blockage or imbalance occurs, the body easily bounces back, returning to a state of health and well-being. However, when this disruption is prolonged or excessive, or if the body is in a weakened state, illness, pain, or disease can set in.
What does acupuncture feel like?
Acupuncture treatments are very relaxing, and many people fall asleep on the table. The needles induce changes in the nervous system, causing a more relaxed state. This switch brings deeper and easier breathing, allowing the brain to receive more oxygen and nutrients, and helps to release mood enhancing chemicals like dopamine and serotonin.
Acupuncture has also been shown to have effects on brain waves. During treatment, the brain switches from alpha and beta waves (focused thought and mental chatter respectively) to delta and theta waves (deep sleep and meditation). These relaxation benefits may last up to a week or more, depending on a person’s overall health and stress level.
Needle insertion is quick and gentle, and most people do not feel the needle inserted. A good response to acupuncture occurs when “de qi” is felt, a heaviness or pulling sensation. This sensation alerts the patient and practitioner that the needle has accessed the qi and healing is beginning. It is not uncommon for the sensation to wax and wane throughout treatment or for it to move throughout the body and resolve.
The body takes 48 hours to fully integrate and adapt to the treatment. It is a great idea to relax after the treatment, drink lots of water, and rest to speed up the body’s adaptation period.
